Field and laboratory technician (full time, summer seasonal) Newmarket, Ontario

We seek a technician to support our multi-disciplinary program from late April/early May to late August 2019 (dates negotiable).

Job description

Duties will be split between assisting with our biological control program and our forestry program:

  • Biological control activities may include rearing insects at our laboratory, site monitoring, data collection and operational releases.
  • Forestry field work may include tree planting, forest inventories, street tree inventories and tree marking.


Location: Laboratory is located in Aurora ON, field work is throughout southern Ontario.

  • Responsible, self motivated, and comfortable working without supervision in laboratory and field environments
  • Competent driver


Education Requirements

Undergraduate university degree or college diploma, preferably in forestry, botany, biology, environmental science, or entomology. We will also consider applicants who are currently pursuing a degree or diploma in any of these fields of study. 


Experience with one or more of the following is preferred

  • Insect rearing (fish hatchery experience will also be considered)
  • Forest mensuration
  • Street tree inventory


Mandatory requirements

  • Daily access to a vehicle for work
  • Work outdoors in a range of weather conditions
  • Weekend work
  • Personal protective equipment to be worn for field and laboratory work
